MACAULAY, Anne

Updated: May 3

December 17, 1933 (Exeter, England) - February 16, 2025 (Duncan, British Columbia)

Anne Macaulay passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025 at The Hamlets at Duncan. She was predeceased by her parents Samuel ("George") Marley (1970) and Elsie Marley (1983), her sister Patricia Marley (2010) and her son Bruce (2017).

Born in Exeter, England, Anne completed her nurse’s training in Devon, and her midwifery degree in London. In 1959 she answered Canada’s call for nurses because she “thought it would be fun,” and travelled extensively throughout the country before arriving in Vancouver, marrying Don in 1963, and raising two sons, Bruce and Callum.

Finally Anne settled in Duncan and eventually became the Head Nurse of the Maternity Ward at the Cowichan District Hospital. Over the years, family and friends benefitted from Anne’s extensive medical knowledge as she was always happy to put her nurse’s cap on to help.

As a young woman, Anne, a natural athlete, was a competitive cyclist, an accomplished racquetball player and an avid skier. Later in life horses and horseback riding were her passions. In Duncan her favourite pastime was trail riding with friends. A staunch advocate of Duncan’s Therapeutic Riding Association, Anne served as a volunteer and chairperson. Whether it was looking after her beloved Appaloosa Maybe and Labrador Marley, or tending her vegetable patch and flower garden, Nature was central to Anne’s life as were her family and friends.
